Lasalle-Based Module - Engaging Communities
Collaboration between Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped (SAVH) and the Singapore Art Museum (SAM)
3rd November 2023
This was a collaboration between SAM X SAVH in which we helped introduce The Touch Collection, adaptations of artworks specially curated so people of all abilities are able to partake in experience art. SAM’s access team has kindly provided us with the works of 4 artists, Zulkifle Mahmod, Ezzam Rahman and Tang Ling Nah. We were working in groups to engage and interact with the ‘clients’ as they called them, make them feel welcome and ask them questions.
My group had chosen to introduce the adaptation of Ling Nah’s work called ‘An Other Space within the House II Scenes I and II’ which are rooms in the form of interactive 3D-printed cubes, spiral staircases and mini chairs that were reimagined from the original which was a charcoal drawing installation. Ling Nah’s work is very much based on space, architecture and infrastructure.
We slowly eased them into exploring the assigned artworks, getting them to rearrange the blocks and play with the placement of the pieces. Since there was a language barrier, we communicated with them as best we could with the help of their caregivers who helped with translations.
It was a very heartwarming experience, I got to witness humans who would like just to talk about their day and be included. It was definitely an eye-opening experience that pushed us all out of our comfort zones. Although the event went differently from what we expected, the outcome was still beyond satisfactory.
